Complementary Contrast, Final Project

Student create final projects that use two colors only and incorporate three simulated or physical textures. Projects may be representational or abstract. Acrylic on paper, 5" x 8."

Complementary Contrast, PHysical Preliminary

Students begin understanding the project by selecting genuine complements from Itten's Color Star. They aim to establish true complements in light-dark contrast therefore, they may have to select diametrically opposite pairs in tints and shade.

Prior to their final project they create a digital sketch in order to understand the range of variations in value that their two colors can create. The intent of the digital image is that it serves as a thumbnail sketch, and not a final work.

Just like in Contrast of Hue and Cold Warm Contrast, students are encouraged to re-use their designs in Simultaneous Contrast and Complementary Contrast projects. Students must become aware of the impact of color on a design.
