International Conference! Cajal y Su Legado Universal. Location: Assembly Hall of University Hospital Torrecárdenas de Almería on May 26, 2023.

It's with great pleasure that I share my forthcoming involvement in the highly anticipated conference: 'Cajal y su legado universal.' Here, I'll delve into the profound impacts of traditional painting methodologies on Cajal's creations and highlight the critical role art plays in the realm of scientific discourse. This gathering is set to illuminate the remarkable contributions of Cajal, focusing on the captivating confluence of neuroscience, art, and literature within his comprehensive body of work.

Unveiling "Cajal's Canopy of Trees": A Visual Exploration of the Father of Modern Neuroscience

I'm excited to share my monograph, Cajal's Canopy of Trees, dedicated to the revered neuroscientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal, often regarded as the "father" of modern neuroscience. This publication adopts a visually engaging approach, delving into Cajal's life through extensive archival research at Madrid's Instituto Cajal and visits to notable sites across Spain. The monograph includes illustrations, paintings, personal essays, and college-level student artwork inspired by Cajal's surroundings, making it an appealing read for those fascinated by the convergence of art and science. This comprehensive resource offers a unique perspective on Cajal's enduring impact and legacy.

Dueling Cajals is featured in the Consilience Journal

Dawn Hunter's painting, Dueling Cajals, is selected for inclusion in the most recent issue of the international publication, the Consilience Journal, Issue 11: Regeneration, Winter 2022/23.

DESCRIPTION:

"Regeneration happens all around us. We know that even though we see the remains of old leaves in autumn, we expect and look forward to their regrowth in spring. Yet, regeneration does not always mean that what is new will be the same as what was lost. Like the hair you shed daily, the regrowth might look different than the others - perhaps it’s grey or a new texture…"

The Consilience Journal, Issue 11: Regeneration

Above, Dawn Hunter's painting, Dueling Cajals, captures Santiago Ramón y Cajal's death mask shadows juxtaposed with imagery interpreted from his nerve regeneration drawings and Nobel Prize.

DAWN HUNTER ART®
Scientific American® Feature

My artwork Dueling Cajals is featured in SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN® in an article about the winners of this year's Art of Neuroscience competition out of the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience. During the past 11 years, the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience in Amsterdam has hosted the annual Art of Neuroscience competition, exploring the intersection of art and neuroscience. A panel of experts judged this year's competition, and my work was selected as one of the winners! "This year's competition received more than 100 submissions, some created by artists inspired by neuroscience and others by neuroscientists inspired by art. The top picks explore a breadth of ideas—from the experience of losing consciousness to the importance of animal models in research—but all of them tie back to our uniquely human brain." ~ Fionna M. D. Samuels & Liz Tormes

Dueling Cajals receives Honorable Mention in prestigious international sciart competition.

Jurors Dr. Bevil Conway, Dr. Flora Lysen and Dr. Sabine Niederer

"This submission struck the jury because of its emphasis on the history of neuroscience. The work highlights how any scientific process, particularly scientific image-making, can be influenced by a multilayering of cultural and historical factors. The jury admired how diverse periods in time from this historical perspective were weaved into one image, and appreciated the effort that went into investigating the sources that Cajal was exposed to. Dueling Cajals serves as an important reminder for neuroscientists to recognize history and its influence on their work. " - AoN, NIN, NL

Examples of my research at the Instituto Cajal. I investigated journals and sketchbooks of Santiago Ramón y Cajal rarely viewed publicly or researched by scholars. To that end, I investigated the particularities of his approach to drawing and the implications of the approach on the content of his research.
